Phyna’s Sister, Ruth Otabor – A Story of Resilience, Pain, and a Pursuit for Justice

The entertainment world recently watched with concern and heartbreak as Josephina “Phyna” Otabor, winner of Big Brother Naija Season 7, revealed that her younger sister, Ruth Otabor, was critically injured in a serious accident involving a Dangote Group truck. This tragic event has sparked not only public outrage but also calls for accountability and justice.

The Incident

On August 13, near Auchi Polytechnic in Edo State, a heavy-duty truck—allegedly belonging to the Dangote Group—tragically plowed into Ruth. Shockingly, this happened just six days after she had graduated from Auchi Polytechnic .

The Aftermath and Public Outcry

The aftermath was devastating. Ruth’s left leg was amputated from the pelvis, and she sustained severe injuries to her head, hand, and her other leg remained critically injured .

Phyna shared her grief and anger on social media, calling out the company for allegedly instructing police to remove the truck’s plate number. She wrote:

“You decided to tell the Nigerian police to remove the plate number… Everybody else takes priority over her.”

Her frustration intensified when she learned that pictures of her sister were shared without consent. Phyna questioned why the Dangote Group referred to Ruth as “Mrs. Ruth Otabor,” calling out the privacy breach and demanding respect .

Company Response

Dangote Group later issued an official statement confirming the accident. They pledged “full support for Mrs. Otabor, including comprehensive medical care and appropriate compensation,” stating that senior officials and the company’s insurance team visited her at the hospital .

Why This Matters

This tragic incident underscores critical issues:

  • Justice vs. Influence
Phyna accused the truck company of using influence to protect the driver instead of seeking justice for her sister.
  • Privacy Rights During Trauma
Involuntary sharing of Ruth’s photos without consent added a painful layer to an already devastating experience.
  • Leadership and Responsibility
At its core, this is a call for responsible corporate conduct—from honoring victims’ dignity to ensuring accountability when tragedy strikes.

What Lies Ahead

  • Compensation & Care: The Dangote Group’s promise of medical care and compensation must be followed with transparent action.
  • Legal Accountability: This case could become a landmark in demanding justice, especially when powerful institutions are involved.
  • Public Solidarity: Social media remains a platform for amplifying Ruth’s story. Many are speaking up, not just for her, but for anyone seeking fairness in similar situations.

Phyna said it herself:

This girl is fighting for lif e..yet all the energy is going into protecting the truck and it’s driver instead of seeking Justice!!!fighting for her life… yet all the energy is going into protecting the truck and its driver instead of seeking justice.”

Her name is Phyna—now, let’s ensure Ruth’s fight for justice becomes a national cause.
